12x12in. (30.48×30.48cm.) Archival pigment ink print on cotton paper. Ed. of 20, 2 AP
Work signed and numbered on the verso.
From the moment of inception, Mother Nature affords a perpetual cycle of beauty and decay. In my latest series, “TRANSFOLIATE,” I explore the fleeting awakening of a single tree in a small nature preserve at the edge of the Pine Barrens in New Jersey. A single trifoliate orange tree—named for its trio of distinct leaves and fierce two-inch thorns—stands out as an elegant anomaly amongst a forest of cedars and pitch pines. As the only orange tree capable of surviving the frozen northern winters, the fruit of the trifoliate orange tree is harshly sour and densely seeded, a fitting symbol of endurance and resistance.
Having arrived in the forest this spring, when the trifoliate flowers were just about to unfurl, I spent the subsequent four days photographing as many of the delicate white blossoms as possible. Running each photograph through various software programs, the images are transformed, revealing and amplifying the hidden colors of the trifoliate orange branches and blossoms beneath.
Part documentation, part transformation, the resulting imagery within the TRANSFOLIATE SERIES attempts to reach beyond a mere documentation of an invasive species in bloom. These flowers and thorns are now transformed into an homage to the wild, impermanent beauty of nature itself. A reflection of the diversity embedded within the natural world, as a counter to the cultural myths and societal illusions that we human beings project onto ourselves. In this way, the series becomes a meditation on change, resilience, and the quiet drama of life unfolding at the edge of perception
